This week, we had the pleasure of visiting a beautiful Catholic church in Studley, Warwickshire for it’s annual PAT Testing. Nestled in the heart of the village, this 18th-century listed church boasts a rich history and serves as a peaceful sanctuary for the local community. Conveniently located just a short 10-minute drive from Redditch, the church continues to stand as a testament to both historical and spiritual heritage.
Over the years, we have built a strong relationship with this church, having carried out our testing services here for an impressive 14 years. In fact, during our latest visit, we stumbled upon one of our old stickers from 2013— a small but nostalgic reminder of our long-standing connection with this cherished place of worship.
PAT Testing for over 120 electrical items
The church building itself houses approximately 120 electrical appliances spread across various areas, including the main church, the kitchen, the sacristy, and the office. Our inspection process covers everything meticulously to ensure the safety and compliance of each item in accordance with current regulations. Regular testing is crucial in a space like this, where electrical safety plays a vital role in maintaining a safe environment for all who visit.
The church community, though relatively small, is incredibly warm and welcoming. They regularly gather for Mass, prayer groups, Holy Communion, Confirmation ceremonies, and weddings, making it a lively hub of spiritual activity. It’s always a pleasure to work in such a friendly and accommodating environment.
As part of our routine checks, we methodically worked our way through each section of the church, carefully inspecting all appliances. Given that the items are checked annually, most remained unchanged from previous visits. However, we did come across a few updates and additions. One noteworthy find was an old lamp that had recently been donated to the church. Upon closer inspection, we discovered it was equipped with an outdated plug top that no longer met modern safety standards. To bring it up to code, we promptly replaced the plug with a contemporary version featuring insulated live and neutral pins, ensuring it complied with the latest British Standards.
This situation serves as an important reminder that any electrical items received as donations should always undergo thorough inspection before being put into use. Even well-meaning contributions can pose potential safety risks if they do not align with current safety regulations.
Our work at the church is not just about compliance— it’s about helping to maintain a safe and functional space where the community can continue to worship and gather with peace of mind.
