You will find computer servers in most educational premises including schools, universities and colleges. A computer server can be a single personal computer or a complete server room with several racks and switches a UPS or firewall. We regularly get asked whether this server equipment requires PAT testing.
We often find that IT managers in these departments are a little resonant about having equipment PAT tested as computer servers can be quite temperamental, so having to turn them off and on again is a nervy process and is not preferred. When PAT Testing any equipment we have to completely turn off and unplug all equipment in order for us to complete a full test. Obviously where computer servers are concerned this powering off does not just affect the server but anyone that is connected to it so a lot of preparation needs to be done before we start the test. We do ask when the best time to run these tests so less users are affected.
When dealing with large server rooms, these are generally powered via a dual power source in case of power cuts. In these circumstances we can perform the test whilst the servers are operational as only the main power source needs to be unplugged during the PAT testing process, therefore the secondary power supply keeps the server running.
How do you PAT test the computer server?
Sense PAT testing offer can offer various methods to test the server equipment including:
- Full electrical test and visual inspection with part or full power off of appliances to test all cabling and equipment
- Visual inspection only of all cables and equipment. Test results are fully recorded but state that the test was primarily a visual inspection.
